The Filtrexx Research, Technical, & Environmental Services Division recently conducted large scale ASTM testing (modified ASTM D6459) to evaluate alternative staking patterns for SiltSoxx that may be more efficient during installation. For years we have seen first-hand how staking behind SiltSoxx can be as effective as through SiltSoxx for sediment removal and capacity in many applications. The objective of the study was to determine performance thresholds for this alternative staking pattern. Results show equivalent performance for low-medium rainfall intensity/accumulation events between staking through SiltSoxx and staking behind SiltSoxx. Based on this new data, we have updated all applicable standard specifications (Sediment/Perimeter Control and Slope Interruption) to allow this new alternative staking pattern. This should allow for faster and less expensive installation of SiltSoxx in all sheet flow applications, thereby further reducing total cost of ownership (life cycle cost) for all applicable projects.
Dr. Britt Faucette, Ph.D., is an Ecosystem Scientist, CPESC, and LEED AP. He earned his Ph.D. from the Odom School of Ecology at the University of Georgia where he researched soil-water-plant performances of various BMPs used in soil erosion and stormwater management applications; served as a state specialist in storm water management, organics recycling, and pollution prevention programs; and served as an adjunct professor. Britt coordinates research, design, and training services for the stormwater and organic materials management industries and serves on technical committees and boards with ASTM, GRHC, CCREF, and IECA. In 2008 he was awarded the annual USCC Clean Water Award. Britt has authored numerous peer-reviewed and popular press publications and popular press articles, two books, federal and state specifications, and has been awarded nearly $500,000 in research grants.
